Pivotal Data Tools

Maintain Visibility Into Your Data at All Times

Visibility creates insight and insight informs decision-making. The right analytic and Data Tools deliver all of the answers that your business needs.

Pivotal Data Tools solutions provide a magnifying glass to find the proverbial “needle in the haystack,” such as a single anomaly that created a crisis. Pivotal solutions will help you find the problem and, because of an extremely low footprint, expose problems with minimal effects on your systems.

Pivotal VRP is a best-in-class monitoring solution that helps your database administrators monitor the current performance of their databases and take a proactive approach to pushing performance boundaries.

Pivotal Command Center offers a web-based, comprehensive administration console for the Pivotal Greenplum Database as well as the Data Computing Appliance (DCA). It includes a set of interactive dashboards, enabling administrators to collect performance metrics and manage system health for Pivotal products installed on the DCA.

PIVOTAL Data Tools Features

To combat any database performance flaw, Pivotal Data Tools equip you with a three-tiered solution that handles all of your database performance concerns. With Pivotal Data Tools, including Pivotal Command Center and Pivotal VRP, your organization gains clarity and understanding of big data analysis.

Pivotal Command Center

Pivotal Command Center is a web-based interface for deploying, monitoring, and managing Pivotal HD environments. With the help of Command Center, your system administrators can determine if the Pivotal HD cluster is running efficiently. If it is not, they can quickly diagnose functional or performance issues or perform required cluster management tasks.

Similarly, Pivotal Command Center is a web-based, comprehensive administration console for the Pivotal Greenplum Database (GPDB), as well as the Data Computing Appliance (DCA). It includes a set of interactive dashboards that enable your administrators to collect performance metrics and manage system health for Pivotal products installed on the DCA.

Pivotal VRP

Pivotal VRP is a best-in-class monitoring solution that helps your database administrators monitor the current performance of their databases and take a proactive approach to pushing performance boundaries. It transcends traditional application performance management (APM) solutions by empowering users with real-time control over database transaction performance, ensuring optimal quality of service for critical enterprise applications. Where traditional APM solutions passively monitor transaction performance, Pivotal VRP provides the industry-unique ability to proactively and instantaneously improve transaction performance via I/O and CPU resource allocation.

Pivotal VRP gives you a real-time view of all transactions in your database through an easy-to-read dashboard. It provides you with up-to-the-moment information regarding the overall CPU and I/O consumption down to the query level. Through various charts, graphs, and modules, you can drill down and analyze your database at any given point in time.

How Do You Simplify Hadoop Cluster Management?

Pivotal Command Center provides the following capabilities to simplify Hadoop cluster management:

  • Visualization of real-time and historical data to cluster health
  • Monitoring of Hadoop service hosts
  • Monitoring of YARN applications
  • Job-level monitoring and analysis

Command Center also includes a Command-Line Interface (CLI) and a Web Services API for easy integration into enterprise monitoring services.

How Do You Support Centralized Monitoring of DCAs?

Pivotal Command Center (GPCC) has data collection agents that run on the Pivotal Greenplum Database master server and each segment server. The agents collect performance data on query execution and system utilization and send it to the console at regular intervals. Monitored data is also stored for historical reporting.

Using the GPCC on the DCA, your administrators can do the following:

  • Perform query monitoring and optimization
  • Perform workload management
  • View historical query and system metrics
  • View Dial-Home alerts and performance information of the DCA

What Modules Are Available for Pivotal VRP?

Pivotal VRP is built modularly and can be customized to fit your organization’s specific needs. At the heart of every Pivotal VRP configuration are three essential parts: real-time monitoring, analytics graphs and charts, and real-time resource management with preemptive rules.

The following add-ons enable you to get the most out of your Pivotal VRP system:

  • Playback – If you need a view of any given period of time in your database performance, the Pivotal VRP Playback module provides you with all the tools available through the live dashboard. While historical data is available in many forms, no other tool can present a historical chain of events as it happened in real time. And if you want to create a rule or a tuning task, or investigate deeper into a specific transaction, all you need to do is right-click to have access to the menu options. When you need to skip to the next investigative period, simply move the time slider to the desired location and continue with the drill down.
  • Variance – The Pivotal VRP Variance module removes any upgrade fears by shortening your upgrade cycle. It gives you side-by-side comparisons down to the single SQL run performance in different environments or at different times. It highlights all issues that need to be resolved before upgrading. Using the Variance module and its in-depth comparison engine, you can also perform day- to-day comparisons and see what has affected the state of your database. Our “What’s Changed?” and “What's New?” tabs provide you with the detailed changes that occurred, even if the only change was the execution plan.
  • Inquire – The Inquire module takes database performance tweaking to new levels. You get performance reports with live views of locks and blocking locks and the ability to resolve them without leaving the interface. You also get a trending tool that sees up to 30 different parameters over a chosen time period to give you an in-depth look into the behavior of your database. This tool allows you to perform trend analysis with a few clicks, and it includes more than 8,000 customized performance reports. If you want to see how user rollbacks affected I/O performance, choose a report or custom-tailor one for your specific performance-trending needs.
  • Performance Business Intelligence – The perfect drill-down tool for looking into the intricate details of database performance, the Performance BI module gives you the flexibility to create your own drill-down filters in a simple drag-and-drop fashion—whether you are a system administrator, a DBA, an application developer, or an IT manager.
  • Tuning Tasks – A mini-CRM system, this module ensures that all tasks associated with tweaking your database performance are kept and followed up from a single location. With this tool for workflow integration tuning—from the live session window to the analytics in the graphs section and other modules—every IT manager, DBA, or developer can understand what is happening with your database.
  • Chargeback – Every resource has a cost. The Chargeback module helps you understand costs, whether you host applications, use a cloud-computing model, or want to charge internal departments. Our unique and detailed repository lets you track and/or charge resources by actual value or use. And to simplify operations, the Chargeback module includes built-in invoicing.
